  What is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy?

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) incorporates horses experientially to help improve the emotional, behavioral, and mental lives of adults, children and families. It involves a team effort between a mental health professional and an equine specialist working together with the clients and horses in addressing treatment goals. This therapy is considered a short term, solution focused approach that uses therapeutic metaphors. The therapeutic sessions with the horses take place from on the ground; there is no riding of the horses.

Within the therapy session individuals have the opportunity to learn about themselves and others by participating in ground activities with the horses. The ground activities and the horses promote the use of metaphors in telling one’s life situation or may parallel a current life challenge. In many cases, the horse or the activity itself becomes the metaphor which helps the individual to see things differently and thereby gains insight into their beliefs and values. This along with processing the horse’s response and the individual’s response allows for the individual to discover how they relate and communicate to others. It promotes moving out of one’s comfort zone in trying new and different approaches in life to see what works and what doesn’t work and then applying it to everyday life.
